In 2000, I was wishing for a way to carry around what I thought of, in my high school sophomore, Beat poetry-loving, purple corduroy pants-wearing way, as ‘the soundtrack to my life’–any song that popped into my head, whenever I wanted it, without having to swap CDs out of my Sony Discman. (The first-ever iPod came out in October 2001.)
